Qiaotou is a small town located in southwestern China in Yunnan Province, spanning the bordering Yangtze River between Zhongdian County (currently renamed to Shangrila County) and Lijiang City. There is a road bridge on the Yangtze River, hence the name of this small town covering part of Zhongdian and Lijiang.

Qiaotou is the south end of the famous Tiger Leaping Gorge hiking route, the other end of which is Daju in Lijiang. There are several buses to Shangrila County, which pass Qiaotou.

Baisha Mural Paintings(China--Lijiang)
The Baisha Mural Paintings is located in the Baisha Village on the plain north of Lijiang. Painted during a period of 350 years in the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911) on the walls of a dozen Buddhist and Taoist temples, the murals were created by painters of various nationalities, such as Han, Tibetan, Naxi and Bai.

Lijiang Mural is quite different from other frescos. Each painting includes at least one hundred portraits, but perspective is used very well, and the close, middle and establishing images are clear. The various lifelike portraits are not only Buddhas but also ordinary people such as bureaucrats, criminals, tourists and executioners. Many of the scenes and subject matters are drawn from daily life-people are shown fishing, riding horses, weaving, dancing and casting iron. The painters used different methods of portrayal within the different elements of the fresco, such as flesh, garments, jewelry, weapons and many other components. The style of these true-life frescos is rural and unconstrained; the colors are strong and have intense contrast but are also unified.

The Lijiang Mural fully demonstrates the superb artistic skills, outstanding creativity and rich imaginations of these excellent craftsmen. The vivid and exact figures, flowing lines, well-defined colors and powerful effects of the exquisite details make the Lijiang Mural not only the rare treasure of art, but also forceful proof of national solidarity and an important source of information for research on national religions, arts, and history.

Black Dragon Pool Park(China--Lijiang)
Black Dragon Pool is a famous Taoist center in the Wulao Peaks of the Longquan Mountains to the north of Kunming. It is so named because legend says that there was a black dragon living in the pool. It is as sparkling as jade and as clear as spring water. The entire park, tucked away in the shades of swaying willow trees,is covered with green grass. Under the Shuocui Bridge a waterfall creates a constant roar as it cascades down the stream.

With the Jade Dragon Mountain"s reflecting in the Black Dragon Pool, green willows stretching their soft branches and chestnut trees standing around, Moon-Embracing Pavilion (Deyuelou) beside the white marble Belt Bridge, and the Five-Phoenix Hall (Wufenglou) that seems to be alive and ready to soar into the sky, the park is really a nice place to take a delightful stroll.

Tiger-leaping Gorge(China--Lijiang)
Tiger Leaping Gorge is a canyon on the Yangtze River, locally called the Golden Sands River, located 60 km north of Lijiang City, Yunnan in southwestern China. Around 15 km in length, the gorge is located where the river passes between 5,596 metre Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and 5,396 m Haba Xueshan in a series of rapids under steep 2000 metre cliffs.

Legend says that in order to escape from a hunter, a tiger jumped across the river at the narrowest point (still 25 metres wide), hence the name. Tiger Leaping Gorge is a contender for the world"s deepest river canyon, depending on the exact definition used. The inhabitants of the gorge are primarily the indigenous Naxi people, who live in a handful of small hamlets. Their primary subsistence comes from grain production and foreign hikers. The gorge is not considered navigable. In the early 1980s, four rafters attempted to go down the gorge and were never seen again. In 1986, the first known successful attempt to sail through the gorge was made by the first expedition to float down the entire length of the Yangtze, starting at the river"s high source at the Gelandandong glacier lake.

Hiking the length of the gorge is possible. The hiking path is well-maintained and is used by the Naxi as part of everyday life in before 1958. It features a surprising variety of microecosystems, waterfalls and a fair number of guesthouses for trekkers in after the 1996 of the Gorge earthquake.

Wulnut Grove(China--Lijiang)
Both trails converge in the middle of the Gorge at its major village of He Tao Yuan, Walnut Grove, a scatter of low houses of rough stone and weatherworn timbers, above the snarling river, is heart of the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Hiking in the gorge is a highlight for many people on this trip with its overhangs, steep walls and Waterfall.

There is no place more fitting to spend a day of rest and relaxation than immersed in the beauty of Tiger Leaping Gorge. For the energetic there are plenty of hiking opportunities; walk the plunging forest tracks to the gorge itself or venture off on the high trail to plunge yourself into a gushing waterfall. Otherwise sit back, relax and soak in the truly awe inspiring views of this remarkable natural wonder.
