Geographical PositionAs the political, economic, scientific and technological, cultural and traffic center of Qinghai Province, Xining is located in the eastern part of Qinghai Province and lies at the upper reaches of Huangshui River.

History
Xining has a history of over 2100 years. Xining used to be a chief commercial hub on the Hexi Corridor caravan route to Tibet, handling especially timber, wool and salt in ancient times. Until now, it is still the only road by which to enter the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

The climate in Xining is characterized as having an arid climate with little rain and has plenty of sunshine; it is dry and windy in spring, and has a short summer season and a long and cold winter.
