Geographical Position
Being the furthest from any ocean, Urumqi is the most inland major city in the world. Urumqi lies in a section of northern foot, south edge of Junggar Basin in Tian Mountain. Urumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is known to foreign visitors mainly for its role as the last stopover along the "Silk Road".

Area
Xinjiang occupies about one sixth area of China. As the largest city in Xinjiang, Urumqi has an area of 10,989 km². The average elevation is 800 meters.

Population
At the end of 2008, the total population of Urumqi City is 2,360,500. The natural population growth rate is 0.55 %.

Nationalities
The city"s rich cultural diversity is demonstrated by many ethnic minorities in the area. There are two major ethnic groups, the Han Chinese and the Uyghur. Other ethnic groups in Urumqi include Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Mongols and Hui Muslims.

Weather
Urumqi has a continental climate. The four seasons in Urumqi is quite distinctive. The hottest time is July and August while the coldest time is January. The best time to travel the region is from May to October.
