Geographical Position
Shenzhen, also called "Pengcheng", is located in the south of Guangdong province. It is separated from Hong Kong by the Shenzhen River in the south, so Shenzhen is always known as "Back Garden of Hong Kong".

Area
The total area of Shenzhen is 1952.84 square kilometers. The area of Shenzhen City is 2020 square kilometers. The size of the Special Economic Zone is 395.81 square kilometers. Shenzhen is mainly undulating with an occasional plain tableland, declining from the southeast to the northwest.

Population
In 2008, the total permanent resident population in Shenzhen is 8.77 million, including transient population 6.45 million and registered resident population 2.32 million. The "New Immigrants" are from throughout the country and account for large percent of Shenzhen"s population.

Weather
Generally speaking, Shenzhen has a subtropical marhitime climate with plenty of rain and sunshine. It is mild almost the whole year. The spring in Shenzhen is relatively dry. The summer, which is hot and wet, is the longest season. It can last for 6 months. It is not very cold in winter. Shenzhen is also an area which is often influenced by typhoons. The most significant typhoons occur from May to December and from July to September.

History
Shenzhen, which was a fishing village 30 years ago, was singled out by the late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping to be the first of the Special Economic Zone in China. Just from then on, Shenzhen became the earliest city of the five special economic zones in China. Nowadays, Shenzhen has developed greatly. Deng Xiaoping is usually credited with the opening up of economic revival in China, often epitomized with the city of Shenzhen, which benefited the most from the policies of Deng.

Shenzhen belongs to sub-tropical maritime region, this special geographical region make it possible to produce some local products, especially some tropical fruits and sea food.
