Nanjing Road reputed as “No.1 shopping street in China” (one of the longest shopping streets in the world) is 5 kilometers long with the east end at the Bund and west end connecting Jing”an Temple. It with a history of 150 years is the busiest street for shopping. Nanjing Road was first the British Concession, then the settlement from other countries after the Opium War. It was a treaty at that time so large quantities of foreign wares imported made it become the earliest shopping street in Shanghai.
If you are interested in high-end goods and big brands you will find this is a good place .For every 100 meters, there will be shopping malls, Mc Donald”s, KFC or Pizza Hut. Almost anything is available: clothing, footwear, bags, books, music/movie CD, jewellery, arts, food, crafts and so on. This street is an all weather pedestrian arcade and always packed with people (even the rain can do nothing to deter them from doing their shopping!). Nanjing Road will be extremely crowded especially at weekends (like London Oxford Street on Saturdays), so take care of your personal effects. As China is the World”s Factory, many goods are produced in China, the prices are much lower than other countries. There are also Chinese traditional clothes chenong-sam shops along this street, and they can tailor made for you.
