Xidi preserves to a remarkable extent appearance of non-urban building complex of a type that largely disappeared or was transformed during the last century. The street plan, architecture and decoration, furniture and the integration of house with comprehensive water systems are the real witness of the history of Xidi Village. The street pattern of Xidi is dominated by a main road which runs in east-west direction and is flanked by two parallel streets. These major streets are joint by many narrow alley ways. In this peaceful village, you can see narrow streets meandering and curving with the contours of the land, streams of pure water running through their center. The homes are plastered and whitewashed with grey tile roofs, rectangular windows, and courtyard walls draped in vines and flowers framing fruit trees.

Xidi Village is arranged in the shape of a sail boat: row upon row of ancient residential buildings are interpreted as the cabins and they buildup the body (hull) of the sailing boat. Tall arbors and 13- Pailou (stone archway, “roof looking” thing and number of columns are associated with that person”s official rank, etc) in former days are just like the backstays and sails of the sailing boat. Stretched and up-and-down mountains mark as the waves of the sea. The Moon Lake (Yue Hu, moon shaped lake) in front of it and fertile lands clustered round it enable Xidi Village can be seen as a large ship is anchoring in the peaceful fleet.
