The Hongcun Village, first built in the Song Dynasty, is laid out in the shape of cattle. With over 130 ancient houses, the village naturally blends into the exquisite landscape, known as a "village in traditional Chinese painting".
Hongcun Village is lying at the foot of the southwest side of Mt. Huangshan, only 11 kilometers away from Yixian town and and 65 km away from Mt.Huangshan. It is a buffalo-shaped ancient village.

In the Song dynasty ((960–1279), the villagers built an irrigation canal entering every houses. So lamost all households in the village are easily connected to the canal. The waterways of the village were meant to be made to offer a sourse of washing water, even fire water in case of emergency. Its construction resembles a baffalo"s body structure. All the buildings are made in line with the local architectural style with exquisite carvings and magnificent symbols of that time.

The village boasts nice scenery - simple but elegant, a fine mixture of old houses, green hills and clear creeks. Hongcun Village has always enjoyed the name "a village in the Chinese painting". The village still has 158 dwelling houses dating back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, nearly 140 are still in good shape. Hongcun Village was listed as the World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2000.
