Geographical Position
Hohhot, which means “green city“ in Chinese, is located at the center of Inner Mongolia, about 670km from Beijing. Hohhot is encircled by the Great Dark Mountains to the north and the Hetao Plateau to the south.

The total area of Hohhot is 17,224 square kilometers. The downtown area of Hohhot is 150 square kilometers.

Population
At the end of 2008, the population of permanent residents in Hohhot is 2,580,000, in which the downtown area is 1,330,800.

Hohhot is an old city with a diverse population of 36 ethnic groups: Han, Hui, Man, Chaoxian, Owenke, etc.

Weather
The climate of Hohhot is arid. Winter is cold and short, and summer is hot and long. Winds in spring are very strong, sometimes with sand storms.

History
Hohhot is Mongolian, in Chinese means “green city“. Hohhot was found by Mongol ruler in the late 16th century. They built a fortress there. Hui merchants came and built a mosque near the fortress. In 1952, Hohhot became the administrative centre instead of Ulanhot. Hohhot becomes one of the famous tourist destinations of Inner Mongolia.
