Yumen Pass
Yumen Pass, or Jade Gate, was a strategic pass on the ancient Silk Road in ancient times. Yumen Pass is also the one road connecting Central Asia and China, which is called Western Regions. The poem written by famous poet Wang Wei of Tang Dynasty made this pass more famous: “Beyond the Yumen Pass the breath of Sring has never crossed".
Yumen Pass is located at 90 kilometers northwest of Dunhuang. It is said that Hetian Jades in Western Regions were transported to China through Yumen Pass in the Western Han Dynasty. Today"s Yumen Pass is a small square castle standing on the sand mound in the east-west strip of desert.
Journey to Yumen Pass will require an entire day since the route is not very well marked. To hire a minibus or other vehicle should cost you about 500 yuan. Worth to go or not to, you decide.

Echoing Sand Mountain
Have you ever seen that a mountain can make sound? Now you will have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful spectacle of the Echoing Sand Mountain.
Echoing Sand Mountain is located five kilometers away from Dunhuang downtown. There are five dunes, of which the vertical height of the largest dune is about 100 meters. The sand of the mountain has many colors ranging from red to yellow, green, black and white. When a strong wind blows, the fast shifting sand roars. When a light breeze comes, the sand creates gentle, beautiful sounds akin to music. The climb to the top of the dunes is a sweaty work, but it is worthy to do. You can climb the Echoing Sand Mountain on foot or on the back of a camel. Just enjoy yourself!
