Geographical Position
As a major stop on the ancient Silk Road, Dunhuang is situated in an oasis containing Crescent Lake and Mingsha Mountain. Dunhuang is a county-level city in Gansu, it is in the juncture of Gansu, Qinghai and Xinjiang.

Area
Dunhuang has a total area of 31,200 square kilometers.

Population
Dunhuang has a population of 180,000, in which the agricultural population occupies half.

Nationalities
There are more than ten nationalities in Dunhuang, in which Han occupies most. Minorities like Hui, Mongolian, Miao, Man and others occupy 1.06 percent.

Weather
Dunhuang belongs to continental climate. The obvious characters of Dunhuang are arid climate, little rainfall, large evaporation, large difference of day and night, and long sunlight. The annual average temperature is 9.3 °C. Dunhuang is extremely hot in summer and bitterly cold in winter.

History
As the most westerly frontier military garrison in China, Dunhuang was the center of trade between China and its western neighbors In ancient times. Dunhuang is named “Historical and Cultural City of China” by State Department in 1986.
