Located in the Yingxian County 75 km south of Datong. Yingxian Wooden Pagoda was first built in 1056 during the Liao Dynasty . It is the oldest wooden Buddhist pagoda in existence. The pagoda is 67 meters high the pagoda wih a 9 story octagonal building. It was was buit without using any nails."The structure of the wooden pagoda is almost perfect," said Ye Keming, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Standing 67 meters, the octagonal pagoda is not only the tallest but also the oldest wooden pagoda in China today. Compared with the renowned Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, the wooden pagoda in Yingxian is 115 years older and 11.36 meters taller. The pagoda was listed as a cultural heritage under first-class State protection in the 1950s.
